Although our Easter week was cut slightly short this year, we still managed to pack lots in! We learnt about traditional Easter customs, talked about how we celebrate Easter, painted eggs and tasted hot cross buns. We also took part in an exciting Easter treasure hunt, with some very yummy prizes.

To celebrate the end of our Leap in Time topic, we held a special Leap Year party for our families on the last Monday of term. The children wrote invitations and we were very pleased by the number of rsvps! The children were tasked with looking after their visitors and took part in art activities, as well as showing off their favourite parts of our learning environment. There was lots of cooking in the mud kitchen, maths and construction activities, as well as tasty refreshments of fruit kebabs and spring cocktails. What a lovely was to finish off a super topic. Thank you to all who attended! As a special treat on Friday afternoon, Macbeth and Measure for Measure classes had a visit from Mrs Flux's new puppy, Barney. He was very well behaved and the children asked a lot of questions, ranging from what did he eat to where did he sleep. We also learnt that Barney enjoys chasing cats a lot! On Friday morning, as part of our day of activities to raise money for Sport Relief, the children in Macbeth and Measure for Measure classes took part in the Mile or More challenge. Despite the chilly weather, all children completed at least four laps of the field, equivalent to over a mile each, and some children even completed six or seven laps. Both classes completed a combined total of 211 laps, the equivalent of 70 miles! An amazing achievement. They even had enough energy for the obstacle course, penalty shoot-out and an outdoor gym session in the afternoon! What a busy day! We had a very exciting find on Thursday. Just as our preschool visitors were leaving, Joseph found a frog among the tyres. After some research into whether it was a frog or a toad, we learned that it had moist skin, jumped and had high bulgy eyes which classified our new pet as a frog. After rescuing him from the car park, the children decided the best place to set him free would be next to our new pond. Joseph thought his name should be Jeffrey and as we set him free, the children all sang some frog songs. The children have been very keen to visit Jeffrey so we hope he approves of his new home. Our Pirates in an adventure with Scientists day was packed full of exciting science investigations and experiments, as well as pirate themed role play, songs, stories, writing and independent learning. The highlight for each class was a fabulous rocket making workshop where we learnt all about different kinds of energy, before seeing rocket fuel be made and making a rocket each to take home!
A wet and windy day with a hail storm thrown in didn't stop a fabulous trip to Cowes Lifeboat Station on Wednesday for Macbeth and Measure for Measure classes! We walked from school down to the Lifeboat Station in two groups and when we arrived, we were treated to a range of activities. There was a talk on their lifeboat, 'Sheena Louise', with the opportunity for children to ask questions about what each part is used for, from the anchor to the foot stirrups! The children were also shown the equipment the Lifeboat crew have to wear and allowed to try on life jackets and helmets. Finally, there was a fantastic talk about tides, linking to our current topic 'A Leap in Time'. The children learnt the meaning of ebbing and flowing, as well as high and low tides and a fabulous new song to tie it all together. We would like to say a big thank you to the Lifeboat volunteers for giving up their time for our trip, as well as all the Mummy's, Daddy's and Nanny's who came with us. You can read an article about our trip with the following link: http://onthewight.com/2016/03/02/151704/ Earlier in the week, the children worked with Mrs Gadsby to make gloop in the water tray. They explored the consistency and texture of the gloop and were especially surprised when we left it over night and came in to find it stuck to the water tray! The children used lots of lovely language to describe what they were feeling and it even inspired singing by some children. |
