Last Wednesday a very exciting discovery was made in our Reception outdoor area. An Early Bronze Age arrowhead in extremely good condition was discovered by Matthew, on his fifth birthday! The arrowhead has been been photographed, catalogued and aged at approximately 4000 years old and has been designated a find of County / local importance!

To link in with the Isle of Wight Literary Festival, Macbeth and Measure for Measure classes had a visit from Nicholas Allan, author of The Queen's Knickers, on Friday afternoon. Nicholas began by mesmerising the children with some magic, before giving a fantastic animated reading of his best selling book. Macbeth and Measure for Measure Classes had another fabulous opportunity last week with a visit from Estelle from the Isle of Wight Heritage Service. She brought a collection of fossils with her and the children took on the role of fossil hunters, hunting for different objects in the collection and finding out what each one used to look like. They also took part in an activity exploring which animals were dinosaurs and which were not, with some surprising results. Since her visit, many of the children have been inspired to try fossil hunting both inside and outside of school and we look forward to seeing more of their findings. On Wednesday, we were thrilled to have a visit from a Palaeontologist. Steve Sweetman gave the children a fantastic talk all about dinosaurs and showed them fossils from his own collection. The children came up with some very interesting questions to ask him including, "why did dinosaurs eat other dinosaurs?", "how long ago did the dinosaurs die?" and "why are dinosaurs tails so long?" Steve was able to answer all of these questions and has inspired the children to do some fossil hunting of their own.
As a special Friday afternoon treat for all their hard work, the children in Reception were introduced to our fantastic new gym equipment. Before starting, the children discussed how they could use the equipment safely and decided on some rules to ensure this. The adults were so impressed by how sensible the children were in looking after themselves and the equipment, and their independence in taking turns and supporting each other through some challenging activities. |
