This is a video of some of our children modelling how to say our phase 2 sounds. The order that they run in this video is the same order that the children learn them in. You'll notice that the children learn the letter sounds rather than the letter name to begin with as this helps them to blend the sounds together when it comes to reading a word such as c, a, t. They learn the letter names at a later date when they are confident with the sound. Sometimes children add an 'uh' after the sound e.g. for 'n', they might say 'nuh', so we encourage them to take away the uh and just say n as modelled in the video. In phase 2 they also begin reading tricky words I, no, go, to and the. Tricky words are words that cannot be sounded out correctly and therefore have to be learned off by heart. We hope this video helps but if you have any questions regarding phonics, please come and speak to a member of the reception team who will be happy to help. A phase 3 video will follow soon. Happy reading!

Here are Esio Trot class doing Dough Disco to Move It, one of their favourite songs. The children love Dough Disco time and concentrate on rolling, squishing and manipulating their play dough in time to the music. The technique aims to strengthen the muscles in their hands and support them on the road to writing.
Our Reception children had a very special P.E. lesson last week, getting to use the scooters for the first time. They were all given instructions on how to fit their helmets safely, before learning to do an emergency stop and manoeuvre around obstacles. We are going to be having more lessons in the Spring Term to further develop their skills.
The children were challenged to listen to Roald Dahl's description of Mr Twit and afterwards draw a picture of what they think he looked like. We were very impressed with their attention to detail and the care they took in their drawings. Here are just a small selection of them. We may well have some budding future illustrators in our classes.
As part of their home learning, linked to our Roald Dahl topic, the children have been making marvellous medicines. They have been on walks to the forest, beach or simply foraging in their back gardens to collect ingredients for their medicines. Each one has been unique, but most have been very smelly indeed. The children have really enjoyed sharing them with any visitors to Reception.
As part of our activities linked to the Isle of Wight Literary Festival, Sue the Storyteller came to visit Reception. She told a very interactive version of the Three Little Pigs, which the children joined in with, before mesmerising them with a story of a limpet shell she had found on the beach. We hope she comes to visit again very soon.
