This is a video of some of our children modelling how to say our phase 2 sounds. The order that they run in this video is the same order that the children learn them in. You'll notice that the children learn the letter sounds rather than the letter name to begin with as this helps them to blend the sounds together when it comes to reading a word such as c, a, t. They learn the letter names at a later date when they are confident with the sound. Sometimes children add an 'uh' after the sound e.g. for 'n', they might say 'nuh', so we encourage them to take away the uh and just say n as modelled in the video. In phase 2 they also begin reading tricky words I, no, go, to and the. Tricky words are words that cannot be sounded out correctly and therefore have to be learned off by heart. We hope this video helps but if you have any questions regarding phonics, please come and speak to a member of the reception team who will be happy to help. A phase 3 video will follow soon. Happy reading!
