Our Reception children had a very special P.E. lesson last week, getting to use the scooters for the first time. They were all given instructions on how to fit their helmets safely, before learning to do an emergency stop and manoeuvre around obstacles. We are going to be having more lessons in the Spring Term to further develop their skills.

The children were challenged to listen to Roald Dahl's description of Mr Twit and afterwards draw a picture of what they think he looked like. We were very impressed with their attention to detail and the care they took in their drawings. Here are just a small selection of them. We may well have some budding future illustrators in our classes.
As part of their home learning, linked to our Roald Dahl topic, the children have been making marvellous medicines. They have been on walks to the forest, beach or simply foraging in their back gardens to collect ingredients for their medicines. Each one has been unique, but most have been very smelly indeed. The children have really enjoyed sharing them with any visitors to Reception.
As part of our activities linked to the Isle of Wight Literary Festival, Sue the Storyteller came to visit Reception. She told a very interactive version of the Three Little Pigs, which the children joined in with, before mesmerising them with a story of a limpet shell she had found on the beach. We hope she comes to visit again very soon.
This week we had an animal week so we could consider how to care for them and understand their similarities and differences to other living things including ourselves. We had an amazing selection of animals spend the day with us including Eli's mice, rabbit, African snails, guinea pigs and budgie and Riley's tortoise. We have never had so many visitors. The children really enjoyed talking about their pets during 'Show and Tell', Thank you grown ups, for all the photographs and Tapestry posts to support their discussion. For our third year running, Rhythm Time will be visiting our shiny new Reception children for their first term at school. A range of musical instruments, scarves, hula hoops and parachutes are just some of the resources the children will be exploring, while also learning how to read musical notes and play their instrument with control. Not only does Rhythm Time support the children's expressive art and musical talents, but we also see huge progress In their listening and attention skills. We look forward to a fun term ahead. To tie in with our celebrations of Roald Dahl's 100th Birthday, Reception have been rummaging around at home to find things that are 100 (or more) years old! We have had some super finds so far including medals, jewellery, coins and a horn. We have also seen photos of a 100 year old tortoise, who is even older than Esio Trot! We can't wait to see what else the children and their families find. Only three weeks into our learning journey at big school and Reception have already been on their first school trip. Cowes Library kindly invited us to a Dr Seuss event put on especially for local school children and it was an offer we couldn't turn down. We spent the morning watching an enthralling version of The Cat in the Hat, told using props, puppets, instruments and songs and introducing the children to a well-loved classic story. There were lots of opportunities to learn about rhyming, as well as join in with drawing pictures, making our own 'thing 1, thing 2 and thing 3' on our fingers and singing brand new songs. The children loved it and are very keen to visit again soon. A big thank you to IWLFSCHOOLS organisers who commissioned the event as part of the Isle of Wight Literary Festival schools programme, with funding from Cowes Town Council. Also, a big thank you to the Cowes Library staff who hosted. It was a memorable first school trip.
Esio Trot and The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me Classes celebrated Roald Dahl's 100th Birthday by dressing up as characters from a book. We had a whole range including Oompa Loompa's, Fantastic Mr Fox, Veruca Salt, Charlie Bucket, ladybirds, spiders, crocodiles and even a golden ticket. What a super effort by everyone!
To celebrate the Rio 2016 Olympics, we held a four day Olympic Week towards the end of the Summer Term. The children were all allocated to a team and competed against their classmates to earn points for their team. The team with the most points overall were then crowned the winners of the Lanesend 2016 Olympic Games! Take a look at some of the sports we took part in. |
