On Friday 17th June, the whole school took part in Empty Classroom Day. This is a national initiative to promote more outdoor learning opportunities for children. Although Reception have continual access to outdoor learning, we still thoroughly enjoyed a whole day promoting outdoor learning and play. We began with a treasure hunt, finding all sorts of interesting objects in the outdoor environment. We used these to make pictures through a process called transient art. We also went on a scavenger hunt and identified and collected leaves to complete leaf rubbings. Finally we had an outdoor music lesson using the boom whackers, which lead to some very interesting games of follow the leader!

On Friday 8th July, Lanesend held it's second Careers Day. We had a wide range of visitors come into school and hold workshops for the children all about their jobs. Highlights for Reception included policemen, paramedics, a hairdresser, a nurse and an archaeologist. The children were very inspired to start thinking about their own future careers.
To celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday, we held a special royal tea party last Monday. The children came to school dressed in red, white and blue and we made Union Jack flags, as well as learning lots of facts about the Queen. To finish the day, we dressed up as Kings and Queens and had our photos taken in the royal photo booth. On Friday. the whole school celebrated kindness day by making and wearing badges to show what kindness means to them. Reception had been working with Mrs Domoney throughout the week to talk about how we show kindness and how it makes us feel They then produced some very colourful badges and wore them with pride.
Reception are really enjoying completing the mile challenge and took part in their most recent one after Friday morning celebration assembly. They have shown super stick-ability each time we do this and we definitely have some future cross country runners in our classes. After phonics this week, we noticed a very important component to our sandpit was being delivered by a big lorry in our outdoor area. The sand had finally arrived! The children grabbed their coats and watched a demonstration by the delivery driver of how the crane worked and which buttons they had to press to lift the sand off the lorry. The children noticed that our site manager needed a bit of guidance with staying safe, too. For all his hard work in building our sand pit, we thought he should probably have the first go. We look forward to seeing what imaginative ideas the children come up with when exploring this new area for learning opportunities. Last term, reception children from across the island had the opportunity take part in a competition to colour in a picture as bright as possible. Amazingly, Mira won the competition which meant that she won a book voucher and 50 high visibility jackets for her peers. Well done to all children that entered, Esplanade were very impressed with all the entries.
Macbeth and Measure for Measure classes had a super afternoon on Tuesday with their first scooter lessons. In between the hail storms and thunder, we gathered on the big playground and learnt how to adjust our scooters and helmets, practised an emergency stop and took part in a challenging game of 'follow my leader.' We are hoping Nicky will come back to give the children, and Miss Wren and Miss Hopkinson, another lesson this half term and we will be planning some scooter lessons as part of our p.e. too! Macbeth class had a special treat on Friday afternoon when we were invited by Hamlet, our buddy class, to help them test out our brand new school micro-scooters. Hamlet class very kindly acted as the mechanics and fitted helmets and adjusted the scooters to the correct height for their buddies. The children in Macbeth then had a chance to try out the scooters, navigating through cones and practising stopping. We all really enjoyed it and would like to say a big thank you to Miss Westbrook and Hamlet class for organising it for us.
With the arrival of some much needed the sunshine, the children have been spending more time accessing outdoor learning opportunities. We have a brand new den and have spring cleaned the whole outdoor area, leading to lots of learning through play. From planting vegetable seeds, to balancing challenges and lots of outdoor writing, it has been non-stop. We are also taking part in Empty Classroom Day on the 17th June with a whole day focussed on outdoor learning, so look out for updates nearer the time.
